Skipper
Three times winner of the America’s Cup as a skipper. His main successes in the field of boat racing are the Victory's of the ISAF World Youth championships, the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, three World Championships of Match Race, numerous Victory's in International circuits of match races and the ’IOR, IMS and One Design World Championship. In New Zealand he received the medal of honour as the Commander of the British Empire and the medal of merit as Distinguished Companion of New Zealand. He has also been manned the boat racer of the year for two years on the run from the International Yacht Racing Union.

Skipper
James is the youngest helmsman ever of an America‘s Cup race (Young Australia, 2000). In Trieste, he won the Nations Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2005 he won the World Match-racing Championship (Calpe, Spain), the World Melges 24 Championship (Florida, USA) and the Bermuda Golden Cup. In March 2006 he wins the Brazil Sailing Cup.
